The Evolution of Permanent Hair Removal

Electrolysis has a rich history rooted in over a century of scientific advancement and remains the only method recognized for permanent hair removal. Its origins trace back to 1869, when American ophthalmologist Dr. Charles E. Michel began experimenting with galvanic current to successfully treat ingrown eyelashes. In 1875, his published findings marked the official introduction of electrolysis as a hair removal technique.

As technology evolved, so did the effectiveness and comfort of treatment. In the early 1890s, French physician Dr. Jacques d’Arsonval discovered that high-frequency current could generate heat capable of destroying the hair follicle. In 1916, Professor Paul Kree further advanced galvanic electrolysis through the development of the multiple-needle technique, which remained widely used for many years. By 1923, Dr. Henri Bordier introduced the concept of using high-frequency current for hair removal, and in 1938, Dr. Peytoureau refined this approach into what became known as thermolysis—a technique using controlled heat to coagulate and destroy the follicle.

Another major breakthrough came in 1948, when Henri E. St-Pierre and Arthur Hinkel patented the “Blend” method, combining galvanic and high-frequency currents to improve treatment precision and effectiveness. This innovation transformed modern electrolysis and laid the foundation for the advanced techniques used today.

Modern electrolysis has continued to evolve through computerized epilators, ultra-rapid timing, and advanced 27 MHz technology, allowing treatments to become increasingly precise, efficient, and comfortable. Today’s technology enables skilled electrologists to customize treatments for each client while safely treating all skin tones and hair types with exceptional accuracy.

How many treatments will I need and what will it cost?

Electrolysis is a highly individualized process, which means the number of treatments and overall cost can vary significantly from one client to another. While it’s natural to want an estimate upfront, it is not possible to predict the total number of sessions required. This is because hair growth is governed by biological cycles that we cannot control, and electrolysis is best performed on hairs in a specific stage of a cycle.

Electrolysis is most effective at permanently destroying the follicle during the anagen phase when the hair is fully connected to its blood supply. At any given time, only a percentage of your hair is in this stage—meaning multiple treatments are necessary to systematically treat each follicle at the optimal moment. Hairs treated outside of the anagen phase are not wasted treatments; they are typically weakened and often return finer and less resilient, allowing them to be more easily and effectively eliminated in subsequent sessions.

In addition, factors such as hormones, genetics, hair density, previous hair removal methods, and the area being treated all influence how quickly we achieve permanent results. Some clients see significant clearance in a shorter timeframe, while others—particularly those with hormonally influenced growth—may require ongoing sessions over a longer period.

For this reason, electrolysis is best approached as a progressive treatment plan rather than a fixed package. During your consultation, we can assess your specific hair growth patterns and create a tailored strategy, as well as provide guidance on session frequency and typical time investment. Over time, as the hair becomes finer and less dense, appointments become shorter and less frequent, ultimately leading to permanent results.
